Our nursing team is highly skilled and has equally varied areas of special interest. Our support team of animal care assistants, receptionists and administrative staff are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for both patients and clients. Although we have over eighty members of staff working across our four branches, we are a close-knit team. Tea and cake breaks are actively encouraged and provide vital opportunity to catch up with team members.

Out of Hours Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon

The Practice, The Staff, The Role
We are an independent practice that has four branches covering different areas, in Suffolk (Woodbridge, Ipswich, Rendlesham and Felixstowe). We’re glad we can provide our own out of hours assistance to our clients, without having to refer them to other emergency services. Our out of hours service operates from Woodbridge and as mentioned, we offer emergency appointments to our clients only. The caseload overnight varies, but on a normal night there is plenty of time to work up a case and breaks in between cases.

A private bedroom is provided and can be used if the shift is quiet – the nature of night shifts is, as we all know, unpredictable, but we do find that our vets and nurses are able to rest on almost every shift. The night team comprises of one vet and one nurse, and both stay on site all night (from 18.15 until 08.15). This team is responsible for looking after our inpatients and answering any OOH calls. When clients do want to be seen out of hours, the vet will be expected to provide emergency and critical care to the patient, work up the case appropriately and perform surgery, when required.

Our team is very supportive and friendly, and we have a WhatsApp group in which we can discuss cases and get a second opinion – as we all know, no one is omnipotent, so it is very handy to know that if we’re dealing with a particularly difficult case, we can rely on our colleagues to help! The use of the WhatsApp group is voluntary, but there is always someone willing to chip in with new ideas and support.

A lot of staff (receptionists, nurses, vets, and support staff) have been with us for many years, so we are a friendly, close-knit team! We are friends outside of work and go out on social events of various shapes and sizes.

Successful Candidate
The ideal candidate will be friendly, confident, and committed to providing a good level of veterinary care. We do require this candidate to be experienced, as this is a sole role.

The Package
● Currently 7 nights in 28 worked for a dedicated night position, or hybrid day/night role available if preferred
● Flexibility on rota if you would like to discuss alternative rota patterns
● On-site accommodation with bathroom and kitchen facilities and a private bedroom
● 31 days annual leave including bank holidays (pro-rata)
● 5 days paid CPD (pro-rata)
● Certificates encouraged and funded
● Company Pension scheme
● Company sick pay

Location
We are based in the beautiful coastal Suffolk area which offers stunning views, wonderful walks, and picturesque market towns. We are perfectly positioned with excellent transport links to London and only an hour away from Stansted and Norwich Airports.
